I’m riding in my second 100 mile Obliteride in 2017, and riding for the first time with Team Siren! My original inspiration came from my sister’s diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer. But this year I ride for all people that face the battle.

This is my first Obliteride and my first century. My inspiration came from a friend, but I also ride for everyone that has been affected by cancer.

2017 is my third Obliteride, and my second year as the Team Siren captain. My initial inspiration to ride was after a friend I first met in second grade lost his battle with a rare form of Leukemia. This year I am riding in support of my uncle Tom and a longtime friend, Michael, who have both been diagnosed with prostate cancer in the last year.

I am a first time Obliterider. Last year my father in-law Daniel Cunningham survived a soft tissue sarcoma that left him with one leg, but it didn’t take his fantastic sense of humor, big heart, novel sarcasm and wonderful wit. His recovery has been a miraculous testament to be a survivor. Breast cancer struck my cousin Kyle’s beautiful wife Kristie Copley (mother of two). She was forced to have a double mastectomy and is not only thriving but has doubled-down on celebrating this life and her family. My personal trainer and friend Joel Mitchell is a testicular cancer survivor and continues to give back to the community with his donations to Locks of Love. However, there are also those like my dear colleague’s wife Cindy Seek and one of my best friend’s mother Lynn Hoylman Schwab who battled incredibly but left this world too soon.
They are why I want to ride… To make a difference, and possibly inspire others to join the fight.

I’m riding in honor of my brother who lost his battle with cancer back in 2009. Despite my personal loss, I’m optimistic for the future and believe a cure for cancer is just around the corner. Though my individual contribution to the team may be small, if replicated at scale, I know collectively we can and will make a big impact in the years to come.

I decided to ride this year largely because my mom passed away last year after a few years battling cancer. I’ve lost a number of friends and relatives over the years from cancer. A couple friends of mine work in cancer research here in town, and I know how important and expensive the work they are doing is. Lastly, I’ve always enjoyed riding bikes, and I used to ride every year to raise money for diabetes research as a teenager. So it made sense for me to join Obliteride this year, raise some money for a cause that is important to me and have fun doing it!
