I’m participating because many of those dear to me from my mother-in-law to close friends in high school and college have left before their time due to cancer. We can find a cure!

I ride because I am passionate to see cancer rooted out within my lifetime. This sickness has affected family, coworkers, friends and more – just too often NOT to get involved. I am proud to be returning for my 6th Obliteride here in 2018. Let’s do this TEAM SIREN! Together we will make 2018 the highest yielding year, and make some good memories doing it!

Like many others, I’ve lost loved ones to cancer. Ten years ago, my grandmother was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. As a non-smoker, it was something that her doctors were not screening her for. I ride in hopes that one day, screening for early detection of various kinds of cancer will be an affordable, comprehensive, and non-invasive option for people as part of their general healthcare.

I’m riding in memory of my aunt Robin, aunt Carol and uncle Mike, all lost to cancer much too young, and for the many others close to me who have had their brushes with it.

I have been a Starbucks partner for a little over 10 years, and my brother Wayde, is also a partner. He happened to find out about the Obliteride while looking at items on the partner hub one day and reached out to see if I would be interested. Since I was looking for a good reason to get out and moving more, this sounded like a great cause and opportunity at the same time. Like many people, cancer has touched my family, and I have participated in other fundraisers for the cause of cancer research in the past.

I’m a 5 year partner. I just had weight loss surgery on 4/20 and have lost almost 70 pounds so far and decided that cycling was going to be my exercise focus due to my area being bike friendly and it having a strong cycling community. I lost my grandmother to lung cancer when I was very little. I remember her time in the hospital and how hard it was for all of us. I also recently lost my stepfather to cancer also and it devastated my mother. Between being motivated for my own health and to help others to hopefully not have to go through the horrible things that cancer does I want to support this cause fully.

I have multiple close friends and relatives who have lost their battle, currently battling or surviving cancer. It is a terrible thing that I would love to see eradicated for future generations. This year I am riding for my grandfather, Guy Welker, who passed away in November 2017. He was living with and battling prostate cancer which he was winning. It ultimately was a stroke that he succumbed to, but cancer was doing its part. I am raising $1000 in his name to fight this terrible disease.

I’m riding Obliteride this year to support the fight against cancer.
I experienced the pain that cancer can cause personally, when my father was diagnosed with cancer at age 56. He had worked hard all his life as a veterinarian and had only recently retired due to not being able to work anymore caused by back issues.
He had so many plans to finally travel the world and enjoy his well deserved retirement, but then cancer struck. He had a long painful journey of about 2 years, which not only impacted him, but also my mother and direct family before he died at age 58.
Losing my dad this way and seeing him suffer so much was one of the hardest things that I have faced in life, and I want to help the fight for a future without cancer.

I ride because I know someone that has battled cancer, and I support Fred Hutch’s mission of lifesaving research to eliminate cancer and related diseases. I also ride because I love to stay healthy and exercise!

2018 is my fourth Obliteride, and my third year as the Team Siren captain. My initial inspiration to ride was after a friend I knew since second grade lost his battle with a rare form of Leukemia. This year I am riding once again in support of my uncle Tom and long-time friend Michael as they continue their fight against prostate cancer.

I’m riding in honor of my brother who lost his battle with cancer back in 2009. Despite my personal loss, I’m optimistic for the future and believe a cure for cancer is just around the corner. Though my individual contribution to the team may be small, if replicated at scale, I know collectively we can and will make a big impact in the years to come.

I decided to ride this year largely because my mom passed away last year after a few years battling cancer. I’ve lost a number of friends and relatives over the years from cancer. A couple friends of mine work in cancer research here in town, and I know how important and expensive the work they are doing is. Lastly, I’ve always enjoyed riding bikes, and I used to ride every year to raise money for diabetes research as a teenager. So it made sense for me to join Obliteride this year, raise some money for a cause that is important to me and have fun doing it!

I have a friend who is going through cancer treatment right now and she is fighting this vicious disease head on with an absolutely amazing spirit and attitude. I will be riding for her. Also, between my wife and I we have fairly recently lost 2 family members to cancer.
